Football Year 1-8
Registrations have now officially closed for the Winter Season.
2026 Season Dates: 2nd May – 5 September
No football on Matariki or King’s Birthday celebration weekends
Grades 5-9:
No football on the middle or last Saturdays of school term breaks. It is on for the 1st Saturday.
Football is offered to KingsWay students from Grade 5 to Grade 13 (approximately Years 1-8). Home games are played on Saturdays at the RDS Football Club, Metro Park (Millwater).
KingsWay students train and play together as a team, coached by selected KingsWay School coaches, and compete in RDS Football colours (Years 7&8 compete in KingsWay football uniforms). Depending on registration numbers, we also offer girls the option of joining either a mixed or an all-girls team. We would love to see more girls give football a go as a winter sport and encourage families to consider this exciting opportunity.
Year 7 and 8 Boys Trials 2026: Due to number of registrations, we won’t be holding trials for this age group.
Year 7 and 8 Girls 2026:
At this stage, we unfortunately do not have enough numbers to form a school football team for Year 7 and 8 Girls. For those seeking consistent football throughout the season, we strongly encourage our Year 7 and 8 girls to register with a local club and then return to school football in Year 9 when the secondary school competitions begin. Local club options include:
We do have a slightly higher fee than RDS as we have extra KWS costs including CDC costs and discount for the Coach’s child. The advantage of registering through school instead of a club is:
- Your players will be under a Coach OR Manager who agrees with the school’s philosophy and values.
- The school has a strict culture where certain behaviours are NOT allowed in line with our school sports code of conduct.
- The older teams will have extra training with KingsWay parent/student coaches.
- School teams are included in the KingsWay School Sports Prize Giving in term 4, Year Book and School Sports Photos.
- You have the opportunity to pay for the fees weekly, fortnightly or monthly through an Automatic Payment system.
Football Culture Event – Monday 23rd March 2026 – 6.30-8pm in the Event Centre. All year 7& 8 Football team players please attend.
Code Development Coordinator of Year 1-6 Football: Mrs Jennifer Peters
Code Development Coordinator of Year 7-13 Football: Mr James Debenham
Knowing your child’s football grade
Football grades are determined by the age your child turns in the year of the football season.
- For example, children turning five between 1st January and 31st December of the current year will play in 5th Grade, while those turning six will play in the 6th Grade, etc.
- Where possible, we try to keep students playing with others in their school year levels. However, New Zealand Football requires teams to be organised by age, not by school year.
- Teams are created based on the number of registered students, and we cannot accommodate specific team or friendship requests.

Football-Specific Information for Grades 5-12
Primary
First Kicks/Fun Footballers Age 5-9 (8:30 to 9:45am on Saturday mornings). This is more of an adult supervisory role, as the skill games used will be run/provided by the club each week, and the emphasis is on fun. More than one parent can share the games supervisor to cover absences, though coordination is the responsibility of those that are sharing.
Junior grades Age 10-12 (any of 9am, 10am, 11am kick-offs) This is a coaching and managing role, but can be shared by parents to get around commitments that prevent their full-time attendance, provided these volunteers coordinate that. A different Coach and Manager is required. An adult Coach can receive $50 off their child’s fees. (Please see conditions below).
These teams are permitted “rolling substitutes”, and every team coach appreciates help from a parent(s) who will manage the substitutions to ensure every player gets equal opportunity on the field each week.
Match Day
Always check time and location of your games either on the RDS FB Group/Page, NRF website, the TeamReach app or directly with your Coach or Manager.
Draws
Grades 5-9: RDS will send out a PDF every Thursday with details for Saturday’s games.
Grades 10 and up: Draw is on the NRF website: Click Here
Please make sure you check the draw Friday night to make sure there have been no changes to the draw for Saturday games.

Match Day Cancellations
Northern Football Federation (NRF) works with clubs and on assessment games will only be cancelled if it is deemed that the conditions or fields are unsafe. Any decisions to cancel will be notified on the RDS FB Group Page and the Rodney District Sport website.
Training Cancellations
These will be communicated via your team’s manager or coach.
Forfeits: If your team cannot play the designated game time, and therefore it needs to forfeit with the Football Club and the affected opposition team, it is imperative that the team coach/manager contacts the CDC by no later than 12 noon on the day before the game. It is very important to do this through formal channels to ensure the communication is circulated to the correct parties.
- Teams do not forfeit unless agreed by the CDC or Sports Dept.
- Out of courtesy, if borrowing a player from another team please request players through the coach and manager.
NOTE: If a student doesn’t make a side due to a lack of numbers to make a complete team, their fees will be reimbursed, however, fees will not be reimbursed to students who don’t make their choice of team in their chosen code or who no longer want to play and who then choose to withdraw.
Once the teams are made up, if a child pulls out, it can cause a lot of administrative work both at school and at the association level and can upset a number of teams where players have to be moved about to reshuffle teams. It can even mean a team has not got enough players to compete in the competition for the season.
