Football
Football is a team sport offered to KingsWay students from Year 1 to Year 13. We welcome new and existing players.
Our Year 0 – Year 8 Football is played through Rodney District Football based at Metro Park in Millwater and our Year 9 to Year 13 football is played through the College Sport competition.
FOOTBALL YEARS 1-8
Football is offered to Year 1-8 KingsWay students and games are played through RDS Football Club. KingsWay students play together as a team under KingsWay School coaches but play in RDS Football colours.
Football Grades are based on age of child before the 31st Dec 2024:
The grade is the age the child turns in the year of the season.
I.e those turning 5 between 1st January 2024 and 31st December 2024 play in 5th grade, those turning 6 in 2024 play in 6th grade etc. Where possible we try to keep students playing in their school year levels however we are required by New Zealand Football to make up the teams by the players age rather than their school age. We will make up the teams as per the number of students we have registered but cannot take requests for teams or friendships.
Following the upturn in interest due to the Womens World Cup held in NZ last year, we hope that greater numbers of girls will want to try football as a winter activity. RDS will be offering girls, depending on numbers, the option to choose whether they would prefer to belong to either mixed, or an all girls team.
Teacher (TIC) in Charge of Year 1 – 8 Football:
Mrs Taryn Wrath
Grade 5-8 (Approx Year 0 – Year 3) Game Information – First Kicks Football
All games are played at the Millwater Park grounds on Saturday mornings. This runs from 8.30am – 9.45am which includes a training session and game time. Please be there by 8.25am, ready to start play at 8.30am.
Games for 2024 Grades 5- 8 see RDS web site or RDS Facebook for dates. Start date: 27th April
Please scroll down the web page for more information and the registration form.
We do have a slightly higher fee than RDS as we have extra KWS costs including TIC costs and a Thank You Voucher for the Coach. The advantage of registering through school instead of club is:
- Your players will be under a Coach OR Manager that agrees with the schools philosophy and values.
- The school has a strict culture where certain behaviours are NOT allowed in line with our school sports code of conduct.
- The older teams will have an extra training with KWS parent/student coaches.
- School teams are included in the KingsWay School Sports Prize Giving in term 4, Year Book and School Sports Photos.
- You have the opportunity to pay for the fees weekly, fortnightly or monthly through an Automatic Payment system.
What Happens On a Saturday Morning:
• First Kicks/Fun Football sessions are Saturday mornings from 08:40 to 09:45.
• Be there no later than 8:30. It takes time for teams to gather together, attendance recorded etc prior to the start.
• Allow time to find parking, we have 250 families taking part this season.
• When you arrive, find the signpost with your child’s Team Name on it. Their team name is in the welcome email you have received.
• Have your child’s attendance recorded by your team’s coach, or their assistant. If your child cannot attend because of sickness or another reason, contact your coach to tell them. Please advise of absences via the team Reach group chat as soon as possible. If you can, avoid last minute messages about sickness on the morning of the game.
• Every player has a coloured bib to be put on, and every team in a grade has a different coloured bib. Please help them put these on. It helps the coach know when everyone has arrived. Do not take bibs home with you.
• While the children are having their warm up, please make your way to the field being used by your team. Their coach will remain with the team sign post, and bring the team over.
• All teams then have approximately 30 mins of fun based skill activities.
• Teams then divide into two groups of 5 and play a game or games against 5 players from the teams on an adjacent fields.
Rules are few, and will vary according to the age grade of your child. Emphasis is on using the skills that have been shown
• At the final whistle/siren/hooter, teams pack up. Your assistance is greatly appreciated with this. Please ask you child to assist with packing up as good representatives of KingsWay.
• Put all bibs back in the bag provided.
• Collect all balls and put in the bag provided.
• Goals are folded, and all these items returned to the storage container area. RDS committee members will stack it away.

It is very important to do this through the formal channels to ensure the communication is circulated to the correct parties.
- Teams do not forfeit unless agreed by the TIC or Sports Dept.
- Out of courtesy, if borrowing a player from another team please request player’s through the coach and manager.
Coaches and Managers
Primary
First Kicks/Fun Footballers Year 5 – 8 (8:30 to 9:45am on Saturday mornings), this is more of an adult supervisory roll , as the skill games used, will be run/provided by the club each week, and the emphasis is on fun. The games supervisor can be shared by more than one parent to cover absences, though co-ordination is the responsibility of those that are sharing.
Junior grades Age 9- 12 year olds (any of 9am, 10am, 11am kick offs) this is a coaching and managing role, but can be shared by parents to get around commitments, that prevent their full time attendance, provided these volunteers co-ordinate that. A different Coach and Manager is required. An adult Coach can receive $50 off their child’s fees. (Please see conditions below).
These teams are permitted “rolling substitutes”, and every team coach appreciates help from a parent (s) who will manage the substitutions to ensure every player gets equal opportunity on the field each week.
Youth Grade – Age 13 (Approx Year 8)
For Youth grade (usually 11am, 12 noon kick offs) this is a coaching and managing role, but can be shared by parents to get around commitments, that prevent their full time attendance, provided these volunteers co-ordinate that. A different Coach and Manager is required. An adult Coach can receive $50 off their child’s fees. (Please see conditions below.
Coaches and Managers Information:
- There is a $50 discount for adult coaches Grade 9- Grade 13 RDS teams off their child’s fees, please see the Coaches and Managers page for further information.
- Please note that we are unable to enter any team that does not have a volunteer coach and manager.

KingsWay School Players’ Code of Conduct
All students who wish to play sport at KingsWay are required to fully commit to the teams they play for and full attendance at trainings and/games is expected.
- Attend all trainings and games unless discussed with your coach/manager first.
- Be punctual to trainings, pre-game warm up’s and games.
- Always show respect and courtesy to your coach, manager and supporters.
- Be respectful and polite to the opposition. Without them there would be no games.
- Always wear the correct KingsWay uniform with pride for all games and wear/bring the appropriate gear to trainings.
- Wear appropriate safety gear at trainings and games. i.e Mouthguard, shin pads.
- Never argue with the referees and umpires.
- Reflect the special character of KingsWay School.
- Always play fair and strive to achieve your personal best
Any breaches of the Players’ Code of Conduct will be dealt with by the Head of Sports and/or Sports Co-ordinator..
KingsWay School Supporters’ Code of Conduct
As a Kingsway School parent/supporter I will, to the best of my ability:
- Be positive in my support for all teams.
- Show appreciation and respect to all coaches, managers, officials and those who volunteer their time so my child can play sport and will never question, shout or abuse them.
- Be a positive role model for my child in my attitude towards sport.
- Insist that my child plays by the rules and principles of fair play.
- Always be positive and never ridicule or shout at players.
- Acknowledge good play from both teams.
- I will teach my child that doing one’s best is more important than winning, so that my child will never feel defeated by the outcome of a game or his/her performance.
At a game never question, discuss or confront coaches at the game field. If a parent needs to speak with a coach, arrange it at an agreed time and place for both parties. Often, what a spectator instructs a player to do from the side lines contradicts what the coach is instructing a player to do and this confuses the player. Your greatest asset for your child during games/practices is your encouragement, not your coaching.
Please remember a positive attitude on the side line goes a long way to ensuring all involved will enjoy the competition

Team Lists 2024
Well done to all who have trialed.
If a student doesn’t make a side due to lack of numbers to make a complete team, their fees will be reimbursed, however, fees will not be reimbursed to students who don’t make their choice of team in their chosen code or who no longer want to play and who then choose to withdraw.
Once the teams are made up, if a child pulls out it can cause a lot of work administratively both at school and at association level and can upset a number of teams where players have to be moved about to reshuffle teams. It can even mean a team has not got enough players to compete in the competition for the season.
