“Acting is a very personal process. It has to do with expressing your own personality, and discovering the character you’re playing through your own experience- so we’re all different.”
Ian McKellen

Drama at KingsWay School is a personal journey that each student makes. They learn through the experience of ‘being’. The vulnerability and discoveries made in the Drama room are significant for each individual. The beautiful thing about Drama at Kingsway and learning through experience is the ability we have to understand and see the world through the eyes of Jesus. His intention and purpose for our lives and the understanding a Christian perspective brings to the world.

The journey a student takes when creating a character requires not only an understanding of the character but of themselves. A student will grow in confidence as they discover who they are as an individual and who God has called them to be. Identities are formed in the Drama room as students dig deep into their own values and perspective of the world.

Students will learn the skills of working as a group and the dynamics of working alongside their peers. All skills which translate into their future careers as great communicators, leaders and listeners. The theoretical skills of Drama are taught from Year 9 through to Year 13. At each level students are gaining the skills to practically apply theoretical ideas and enrich their skills in higher order thinking. They will explore a variety of theatre forms to name a few; Elizabethan theatre, Melodrama, Realism, Clowning, Epic theatre and many more.

The most powerful voice when advocating for the benefits of Drama is our students;

“For me drama is more than just getting up and acting. It’s about relationships and learning to understand human nature. In Drama you don’t just learn to act – you learn about what makes society tick, what motivates people, and how to relate to others. You need to be able to work well with others in a group scenario and understand human nature to accurately represent natural human emotions when acting. Drama is perfect for anyone wanting to develop interpersonal skills, as well as confidence. Drama is definitely an invaluable subject to take.” Jordan Lapish (Year 11 in 2016)

“Drama class is one of the few places where I feel comfortable to contribute. It’s an environment buzzing with creativity, where your opinions are valued and appreciated.” Renee Braddock (Year 11 in 2016)
